This is the first book of this auther that I've read. I will read more of his stuff because this was a fun "who done it" story that keeps your interest, and keeps you guessing about the killer. There aren't too many characters (which is a plus for me) and the ones in the book are all likeable. This author gives us a little (not too much) background and history on the characters. I never like an author or story that does'nt include some background on the characters. How can I be invested in the story if I don't know a little about the people in it. Off to read the first book in this series.

Good story.
A lovely cast of characters (some doomed) keep this mystery moving at a fast pace. Very fond of this author
In the annals of British mysteries, Peter Diamond and company I would argue rank near the top--snappy, economically
written, just enough detail to set the scene. This one has a tight plot and a well-contrived denouement. The House Sitter is the
first of the series I have read, and I look forward to many others. Love Peter Diamond's sardonic wit and pithy one-liners.
A bit slow to start but eventually intriguing with convolutions and unexpected turns. I did,however, guess one culprit. Also Livesey got a lot of information out through a journal written by the victim
Peter Lovesey is one of the most respected and beloved practitioners of traditional mystery in England. Unfortunately, his following in the USA is not as big as it should be.
He is a grandmaster of the rare skill these days, the skill of the puzzle. His plots are convoluted and complicated, but what makes it exceptional is that his solutions and twists are unexpected, but logical.
His detective Peter Diamond is a real gem too. Big as life figure, but believable with human traits and faults.
"The House Sitter" is another marvelous book by Peter Lovesey.
I had been looking forward to reading Lovesey and wanted to understand why so many readers enjoyed his work. A high recommendation is that I actually remember the book especially for its atmospheric evocation of time and place. Not your usual mystery and in that sense a different and a good read.
What can I say? I'm an addict of this series ..... and am working my way through these novels. Some I have liked a bit better than others, but overall I wouldn't want to have missed one. Nice characters, atmosphere, mystery, and a good read on a rainy eve in front of the fire! I recommend you step into this pond! Joyous!
