Taras Bulba Nikolai Vasilevich Gogol Books Reviews
The novel is based on a screenplay by Waldo Salt and Karl Tunberg, which in turn was take from the great short novel by Nikolai Gogol.
How could a book with lots of graphic violence about a war-seeking, aggressive group of men receive five stars? Well, it is written by Nicolai Gogol about an interesting slice of Ukrainian history that represents a mindset that was necessary due to the geographic location of the country of these men. Fighting off domination by barbarians to the east and the Poles to the west, these men learned from an early age that fighting, even being the aggressor was necessary for survival. Heroism is learned, instilled rather, and in this case it was a vital value for the survival of such a rich, colorful nation.
I enjoyed the window into Cossack life and this time period. The story? Somewhat improbable. No real likable characters. A father destroys his family through his own foolishness.
Greatest novel of all times
