This book is stunning. It definitely has M/M romance elements, but it is much more than that. It's a beautiful story set in 1870 Wyoming. I don't know if the author has ever been to South Pass City, or what's left of it, but she writes as though she has. The book contains many historically-accurate details, from the first female justice of the peace in the country, Esther Hobart Morris, to the brand of coffee they drank (Arbuckles' Ariosa Coffee, still in production today--apparently they really did have coupons back then that could be redeemed for handkerchiefs, too). It's a lot like a Louis L'Amour western.

However, while Louis L'Amour often (or even usually) included romantic plot lines, he didn't go anywhere near where this story does. There is the bad boy / good boy drama alluded to in the blurb, but here, too, there is much more. The main character is Elijah, 20 years old and a survivor of scarlet fever. He's mostly--not completely--deaf, and has been raised since early childhood by his adoptive father, the town doctor. Because of his hearing difficulty, his world is very isolated. Even though he has the doctor, who is very patient and interactive with him, he is very much alone and spends a lot of time on his own, even when he is in the presence of others. He does not connect much with the others in his life because of the communication barrier and because of their disinclination to make any effort to get to know him. This isolation makes the internal conflict he feels about his sexuality much worse.

The description of what he goes through--not wanting to do something, but doing it, anyway, then feeling that he has ruined his chances of ever being a good person and worthy son--was pretty vivid and even painful to read. There definitely are some parts of the story that are a major downer.

In the end, it's an incredible achievement. There are a number of major elements in this story that all play out individually, occasionally coming together then diverging again, and finally colliding. It's more developed and complex than most books in this genre that I have read. I was profoundly impressed.

It's even more impressive considering that it was written by an Australian woman. She did her research.

What a great story this was. I loved it and will recommend this book to all my friends that like reading.
3.5 Stars A raw story of a young man in a western boom town in the late 1800s. The book is very well written with an interesting plot.
I really enjoyed this book . The author created some wonderful characters with Elijah and Grady . I look forward to finding more books by this author . I highly recommend this book . It's different , it has a sly sense of humor , a lot of moving moments and a good story .
Would like to see a follow-up book to continue the story on what happens after the winter and adventures of Grady and Elijah.
The story line was great and I enjoyed reading but left hanging in the end
Lisa Henry's writing is gorgeous. In "Sweetwater" she transported me to the old West with a tale that was wildly romantic, while always believable. The characters in this novel are deeply flawed people, and as such, deeply recognizable, even sympathetic. This is the third novel by Ms. Henry that I've read and I want more.
As a reader who spent a large majority of her teenage years reading Zane Grey and Louis L'Amour, I absolutely adored this book. I will read it again. A genuine Western with a fascinating lead character, it's very well written, extremely clean editing. Not your stereotypical romance novel Ark so that's what you're looking for you probably won't enjoy it. But it's spectacular if you're like me and you love westerns and gay romance novels
So, while I’m working through my Lisa Henry marathon I attacked Sweetwater. This is a slow read that works because it develops nice and slow. As the tension built, I was honestly nervous. I stopped reading for an afternoon because I was afraid Grady might not be the man I wanted him to be. I was worried out of my skull about how Elijah was going to survive. I truly liked him and wanted the best for him. Reading this was a delicious torture for me. It all paid off for me because I loved the ending.
