Ruins of Ambrai Exiles Melanie Rawn 9780330344197 Books

I absolutely love this series, however, I don't recommend the book until she writes book three or you will join the legions of fans who have waited in semi-agony for the last twenty some odd years wanting to hear the end. Seriously, if you like fantasy you will love this book and bless and curse the person who introduced you to it for the previously stated reason.

Ruins of Ambrai Exiles Melanie Rawn 9780330344197 Books Reviews

i think I read it once, and it was super.
Exiles begins a new series by a writer who is so excellent that words are inadequate to describe her talent. If you have the time and interest please read my review on book two of this series The Mageborn Traitor. This story, however, is of wrenching betrayals, infuriating losses, grand, exhilirating passions and rampant humor that is so sly and funny at times that you laugh out loud. I adore the tantalizing, outrageous sexiness in both books of this series. In this one where the characters are young and just full of raging hormones, their sexuality is so earth shaking powerful that, well, just for fun, let your imagination roam the convolutions of all THAT can mean to you as you heat up to the sizzle while you read about Collan and Sarra's struggles against and surrender to hot nights of lusty passion. Yum! The balance of the review for this book is included with The Mageborn Traitor. I found these books, on every level, simply irresistable!
This and Melanie's Dragon Prince series are some of the best character-driven tales written over the last 10 years. Her worlds are fascinating, well developed and original.
I like the way she uses magic and how she is not afraid to use her characters to the best advantage for the story, even if it means killing a beloved main character.
All in all she is a well rounded, clean writer.
One of the things I like the most is that these books, while thick, do not slow down plot-wise. Unlike many authors who can get to tied up in description and really lengthy charcater devlopment for minor characters Melanie stays true to her plot and always ties up her plots by the time she is finished. Not always in the same book but you always get a spectacular finish.
Now if only she would finish book 3!!!!
The Ruins of Ambrai is the first in what is supposed to be a 3-book series about a futuristic, matriarchal society on Lenfell, a planet colonized by those who had fled prejudice and persecution in the old world (Earth, I'm assuming, or that's how I thought of it). On Lenfell society is divided into classes called Tiers, and at the top of the heap are the Names, or Bloods, extensive family webs headed by women. Those who are born with magick are Mageborn, and as this story begins, Mageborns are slowly being obliterated by their own - a faction of magickal borns who use their magick for ill and known as the dreaded Malerrisi.

The story's protagonists are three Mageborn sisters - Glenin, Sarra and Cailet - who are separated early in childhood by the destruction of their home, Ambrai, and the tearing apart of their family. All three have had Wards put on them to lock their memories so that they don't know who they really are or that they even have sisters, but these blocks soon break down as the last of the dwindling Mageborns and their supporters face down the Malerissi. Glenin, who was taken by her father after the destruction of Ambrai, has had her magic twisted by hate and lust for power. Sarra and Cailet grow up ignorant of who they really are - Sarra, the First Daughter of Maichen Ambrai, and Cailet, the most powerful mageborn in centuries. As the sisters become young women, the escalating violence swirling around them inadvertently brings them face to face, and it's a showdown that sets all three on their individual paths. It's obvious that the sisters each have a destiny to fulfill in their changing world, and at the end of Ruins the reader is left with a feeling of excitement and anticipation at what's to come.

There is a sequel, The Mageborn Traitor, which I plan to read in the next few months. However, the third and final in the series, The Captal's Tower, hasn't yet been written, even though the title has been set for years and even has an ISBN # on . The author's publisher, DAW, is still waiting for it, as are the fans. Since The Mageborn Traitor was written in 1997, it's now been ten long years and I for one despair of her ever finishing it. I'll stay hopeful, though.
One of my favorite books; I have worn through two copies, this is my third. The world is rich and complex. The characters full bodied and full of surprises. I can't wait for the last book in the trilogy (and I have been waiting over half my life for it).
