I am reading everything's on my Kindle keyboard before I start using my Paperwhite. Came across a whole bunch of books by J D Robb and I have been binging on them this week.

J D Robb, as you probably know, also writes romance as Norah Roberts. Writing as J D Robb, however, her style is darker and grittier.

This is a series of mysteries set in the not too far distant future when the earth has colonized a lot of planets, societal norms have changed in some ways, yet law and order remains law and order and the police are there to protect and serve.

This series chronicles the cases of Eve Dallas as she investigates murders and believes it is her vocation to stand for the dead, to see that they get justice.

In my opinion, a person is going to love these books or hate them, I happen to love them.

Well written, strongly developed characters, detailed plots. Someone is doing research and I appreciate that. Of course, there are some love stories woven in because that is part of life, after all, it can't be all grim.

FINAL DECISION A dangerous and powerful killer is determined to keep secrets and will do anything -- even destroy Eve -- for protection. This is one of the best in the series because the story hits close to Eve when the killer turns on her.

THE STORY A killer is expertly removing organs from vulnerable people for a mysterious purpose. The first kill is a street person with his heart removed in a precise and clean manner. It appears that the killer might be a well-trained surgeon. When Eve presses for answers, she becomes a danger and has to be eliminated. Suddenly Eve, herself, is in the crosshairs and has to fight for what matters to her along with uncovering the killer.

OPINION This is one of my favorite books in the series because of the connection between the events in the case and Eve's personal life. And the connection is done in an interesting way and not the typical sexual crime case that triggers her memories so often.

Readers of the series know that Eve has a childhood filled with rape and abuse. She has made herself by dedicating herself to her job. This book challenges that part of her life and Eve has to deal with that along with solving the crime. When I read these books, I am not as interested in the solving of the crime as I am with the overarching story about Eve.

For me, this book by forcing Eve to confront some of her deepest fears about herself shows her strength and determination and also how much she has changed from the closed off woman from NAKED IN DEATH.

Although Eve is deeply challenged here, she is not alone anymore.

WORTH MENTIONING This book introduces both Don Webster and Louise Dimatto.

CONNECTED BOOKS CONSPIRACY IN DEATH is the eighth book in the In Death series. The crime/mystery is completely separate and independent, but there are continuing personal story lines in the series. I suggest the series be read in order because of the significant personal stories.

STAR RATING I give this book 5 stars.
In is difficult at time to know how many books are included in this series as there are many. It think, as this review is being written, the count is up to about 50 or more. For me this is a good thing because this is one of my all time favorite series in this particular genre and I have read most of them...not in order of publication, but never-the-less have read them. If my count is correct, this one is about number 9 in the series. Characters are still being developed and new characters are being added.

J.D. Robb, who is actually Nora Roberts, in a rather unique talent among ‘A-List’ authors in not only can she produce a good police procedural (futuristic) and action story, but she can also write and write quite well. Her prose at times is almost poetic.

In this rather grim story we have a killer who is killing street people and harvesting defective organs. The killer is obviously a skilled surgeon and quite bright. As the death toll increases the suspense does likewise.

Along with trying to solve these murders, Eve is fighting for her professional life in that she has her badge pulled due to the suspicion that she is responsible for the death of a fellow cop. This of course puts Eve in a complete tail spin because her life is her job...along with her husband Roarke. Eve spends a great portion of this novel without her badge or the authority that goes along with it.

We have the usually cast of characters in this one with a few new ones introduced who will appear in future novels. Peabody and McNabb have discovered each other which make for some interesting dynamics.

In a backhanded sort of way the author has taken a goodly swipe at the medical profession and shows the underbelly of what should be an honorable profession for all involved. Robb normally takes her anger out on politicians and news media types (yes, she does not relent in this one either) but it is nice to have a new target for her sarcasm and wraith.

From a personal point of view, this is one of the few series I’ve read, and there have been many, that seems to improve as each novel is published. Robb does not seem to be running out of steam and the speculation of Publishers Weekly back in 1999 somewhat predicting that the series may be coming to an end sure missed the mark by at least 40 books...so far.

It should also be noted that in this work we see an Eve who is a bit mellower than in some of the previous works but I can assure you that this does not last in future publications.
